Acreage Clearing in Charlotte, NC

Buying five, ten, or twenty wooded acres on the edge of Charlotte is the easy part. Turning that tract into a homestead with a drive, a house site, open yard, and maybe a barn or a field takes a plan, a budget, and a crew that knows how to clear big ground without wrecking it.

We clear multi-acre tracts around the outer edges of Mecklenburg County and across the line into Union and Cabarrus. Most owners clear in phases, starting with what they need first and opening up the rest as time and money allow.

How It Works

What Our Acreage Clearing Process Is

Big tracts reward planning. These four steps turn a wooded parcel into a clear, phased roadmap before any trees come down.

  1. 01

    Walk the Whole Tract

We cover the boundaries, creeks, slopes, and road frontage with you and talk through how you want to use each part.

  2. 02

    Draw Up the Phases

Drive and house site first, then yard, field, or outbuilding areas, each with its own scope and written price.

  3. 03

    Clear Phase One

We open the priority areas with the right method for each, mulching where it helps and removing material where it must go.

  4. 04

    Plan What's Next

We walk the finished phase together and adjust the remaining phases now that you can see the land.

Clearing Multi-Acre Tracts Around Charlotte

Where the Acreage Is

Inside the city, big wooded tracts are getting rare. Most of the acreage we clear sits toward the edges of Mecklenburg County, in the far southwest past Steele Creek, the northwest near Mountain Island, and the eastern side toward Mint Hill, then out into western Union County and southern Cabarrus. These parcels are often old family land, timber that was cut decades ago and grew back thick, or former farms where the fields have turned into young pine and sweetgum.

Building a Homestead in Phases

Few owners clear an entire tract at once, and there's no reason to. The usual order is the driveway and house site first, since that's what the builder and lender need. Next comes the yard around the house, then an outbuilding area, a garden, or ground that will become pasture. Phasing spreads out the cost, lets you live with the land before deciding how open it should be, and keeps soil covered for longer. We price each phase separately so you always know what the next step will cost.

Mulching Versus Pushing and Hauling

There are two broad ways to clear acreage. Mulching grinds trees and brush into a layer of chips that stays on the ground, which protects the soil and avoids trucking costs. Pushing and hauling takes trees out with roots and stumps and removes the material, which leaves bare ground ready for building but costs more and exposes clay to rain. Most acreage jobs use both: removal where the house, drive, and buildings go, and mulching across yard, field, and trail areas. We'll recommend the mix that fits each part of your plan.

The One-Acre Erosion Control Threshold

North Carolina requires an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan for most land disturbance over one acre, and acreage projects cross that line quickly. Phasing doesn't automatically avoid it, since the total disturbance can still count. If your plan involves more than an acre of disturbed ground, talk with the county about the plan requirement before we start, and factor in the time needed for approval. Requirements vary by county and project, so confirm the specifics for your parcel.

Creeks, Buffers, and Tree Lines

Rural tracts often have a creek or wet bottom running through them. In Mecklenburg County, S.W.I.M. stream buffer rules limit clearing near many streams, and the neighboring counties have their own buffer rules, so confirm what applies before we work near water. Beyond the rules, we usually suggest keeping wooded strips along road frontage and property lines. They give you privacy, cut wind across open ground, and keep your homestead from looking like a cleared lot from the road.

No Burn Piles

Burning was once the default way to get rid of clearing debris on rural land. Open burning is now heavily restricted in Mecklenburg County, and even where it's allowed, it brings smoke, permits, and neighbor complaints. Mulching handles most of the material on site, and anything that has to leave is hauled. Either way, there are no smoldering piles left on your land for weeks.

Why Us

Why Charlotte-Area Landowners Choose Us for Acreage

Phases That Make Sense

We help you decide what to clear first and what can wait, so your money goes to the parts you'll use now.

The Right Method per Area

Removal where you'll build, mulching where you won't. You don't pay haul-off prices on ground that doesn't need it.

Privacy Left Standing

Road frontage and boundary tree lines are planned in from the start, not an afterthought.

Clear Paperwork Guidance

We flag the erosion plan, buffer, and county questions early so permits don't stall your build.

Clearing acreage is a long-term relationship with a piece of land. We plan with you, clear the parts that matter first, and come back for the next phase when you're ready. Many of our acreage owners end up calling us again for the barn site, the field, or the trail a few years later.

Questions

Charlotte Acreage Clearing FAQs

How many acres do you clear?

We work on everything from a couple of acres to large rural tracts. The size of the job mainly affects how long it takes and how we phase it, and we'll give you a timeline with your estimate.

Should I clear all my acreage at once or in phases?

Most owners phase it. Clearing the drive and house site first gets construction moving, and waiting on the rest lets you see the land and spread out the cost.

Do I need a permit to clear several acres?

Most land disturbance over one acre in North Carolina needs an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan. Check with your county before clearing, since rules and processes vary between Mecklenburg, Union, and Cabarrus.

Is mulching or hauling better for acreage?

It depends on the area. Ground where you'll build usually needs trees and stumps removed. Yards, fields, and wooded edges often do better with mulching, which protects the soil and costs less.

Can you leave a buffer of trees along the road?

Yes, and we recommend it on most rural tracts. A wooded strip along the frontage gives privacy and keeps the property looking natural from the road.

Do you clear acreage outside Mecklenburg County?

Yes. We regularly clear tracts in Union and Cabarrus counties near the Charlotte line, as well as the outer edges of Mecklenburg.

Will you burn the trees on my land?

No. Burning is heavily restricted in Mecklenburg County and brings smoke and permit hassles everywhere else. We mulch on site or haul material away.

Can you clear around a creek on my property?

We can clear up to the edge of any protected buffer, but stream buffer rules limit work near many creeks. Confirm the buffer for your parcel with the county before we plan that area.

How is acreage clearing priced?

By area, vegetation density, tree size, terrain, and the method used in each part of the tract. Each phase gets its own written price after we walk the land with you.
